At the completion of these courses:
Level I - Beginner:
Students can function in basic communication
settings. Can ask and answer biographical questions,
make simple requests, and use polite expressions.
Are able to describe objects and activities in
simplified terms and relate to events. Are able to
understand and reply to their simple needs.
Level II - Intermediate:
Students can get the idea of what is being said, and
are more confident when speaking. Can function in
most general communicative settings. Are able to
make suggestions, respond to opinions in daily
conversation, describe actions, objects and people,
and can take and give instructions and directions.
Level III - High Intermediate:
Students understand what is being said. Can function
in an increasing variety of settings, some
specialized. Can give more detailed descriptions of
objects and activities, present the pros and cons of
a course of action and respond diplomatically in
uncomfortable situations. Are more involved with the
language, slang, idioms and culture.
Level IV - Advanced:
Students understand and are comfortable speaking.
Can function in several specialized settings. Are
able to speak freely in a wide range of subjects.
May write letters and stories. Can understand and be
understood in presentations, and in several business
situations.
Level V - Conversational:
Students are fluent when speaking. Can read and
write comprehensively. Are able to narrate events in
a descriptive manner and discuss complex topics. Can
participate in formal business meetings and use the
language of negotiation, both in person and on the
phone.
